A New Perspective: A Horizontal Growth

Have you ever felt like you're stuck at some point in your career? It is very normal. Everyone goes through that. Maybe what's important is to get out of that funk! Some people are designed to move vertically at an almost steady pace and some are designed to grow horizontally. You may initially think of a woman's waistline when you encounter the word horizontal growth, but I am more referring to (personal and) professional growth.

There is beauty in growing horizontally. It's a whole new perspective, for often, we only see growth as vertical. Little do you know you are expanding your horizon, supporting the development of a colleague, inspiring others to become winners, just like you are! Others look up to your expertise. You are establishing good connections more than you know and gaining a wonderful reputation, based on sound integrity!

In our profession as Executive Assistants, almost always, we are the ear in the organizational chart – a box hanging next to the CEO. Should we wish to climb up, we first have to move a step down and gain momentum to level up. Perhaps, after my vertical growth in 2001, I chose to grow horizontally, being happy supporting others reach their milestones. Again, it's a choice and you get to decide!

I have been with Novartis for almost 23 years now and in the position as Executive Assistant to the President & Managing Director close to 14 years, now. These were and still are wonderful years! In many ways, it may seem easy considering the many years of experience. While I seemingly thrive in cheerful judgment, there were times I catch myself pondering “what's next”? You get that feeling sometimes that you may be hindering the growth of new-blood by being stuck in the position. Then I remember … maybe what I have are the many years of experience which equates to many daily adjustments to different Executives of many nationalities, that others may not have the opportunity at the moment. Then by remembering, it makes me smile and again back on my feet, accepting the beauty and wonder of my reality and my choice!

How about you, dear LEAP Colleagues, what's your reality? Let's talk about your perspective.
